Old Moorcroft Pottery
Artistic vision. Timeless design. Supreme craftsmanship.
We are proud to stock an extensive collection of magnificent classic vintage pieces, designed by William and Walter Moorcroft between 1897 and 1955, a period widely regarded by collectors as the pinnacle of the company’s artistry.
Why we cherish old Moorcroft
Collectors are drawn to vintage Moorcroft for its painterly quality and the sublime delicacy of its fine tubelining, both of which are now sadly lost arts. The depth of lustre and unique colours in these pieces, which cannot be replicated by modern potters, also hold a special allure. Many of the chemicals and rare metals used in the original glazes are no longer permitted in kilns for health reasons, meaning we will never see the like of these pieces again.
As Moorcroft buffs will know, William Moorcroft’s formula for the Flambé glaze, along with his technique for firing, was a closely guarded secret. William passed it on to his son Walter, but because of the mercuric oxide used to create the red underglaze, true Moorcroft Flambé can never be accurately reproduced.
