William & Walter Moorcroft
The Cotswold Gift Gallery has an extensive collection of classic pieces designed by William and Walter Moorcroft, dating from 1897 to the 1950s. This era is widely regarded by collectors as the pinnacle of Moorcroft Pottery’s artistry.
Collectors are often drawn to these vintage Moorcroft patterns because of the sublime delicacy of the fine tubelining, a skill that has, unfortunately, been lost over time. Additionally, the depth of colour achieved in these older pieces cannot be replicated by today’s potters. This is partly due to the lost techniques and partly due to the specific oxides used in the original processes.
We will never see the like of these pieces again.
For the best, most perceptive, in-depth study of William Moorcroft and his work, we cannot recommend too highly William Moorcroft, Potter: Individuality by Design by Jonathan Mallinson, available online here.
