Millside Vase 159/6 by Moorcroft Pottery designer Rachel Bishop.

In 1914, renowned architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh left Glasgow and relocated to his new home, Millside, in the village of Walberswick on the Suffolk coast. Seeking peace and seclusion, he settled in this small artists’ colony, dedicating himself to watercolour painting. During this period, Mackintosh produced some of the finest flower studies of his career.

From Millside, Mackintosh could wander the country lanes and tend to his small flower garden. His designs showed his lifelong interest in plant forms, and it was Mackintosh’s floral motifs of that inspired Rachel Bishop’s work on the Millside Vase. The vase features stylised tulips and intricate lattice work, enhanced by Rachel’s use of coloured tubelined slip, that give it a jewel-like quality.
