Wrens are among the most common birds in the UK, thriving in diverse habitats and skilfully darting into foliage for protection. Measuring just 9-10 cm and weighing about the same as a £1 coin, they have round bodies, short wings, and a perky tail.
Their loud song, punctuated by a trill every five seconds, characterises their distinctive nature. Singing through winter, they are tied to festive folklore. In Holland, a wren is called a Winterkonig – the winter king – but harsh winters can cause their numbers to drop. Vicky’s plump wrens, however, enjoy a rich berry feast this Christmastime.
