A Family Business
Founded in 1945, De Rosa is a family-run business that has spent decades shaping and redefining ceramic artistry. From its origins in the state of Canelones, Uruguay, the workshop has developed a style characterised by bright colours, distinctive forms, and intricate textures. De Rosa figurines (also known as rinconada) stand out for their artistic integration of platinum, gold, and vibrant enamel glazes. Each piece is carved and painted by hand, ensuring no two are ever identical.
This meticulous process, carried out entirely within the Canelones workshop, results in creations of remarkable individuality. De Rosa’s dedication to craftsmanship and artistic expression has established its place among the most celebrated ceramic producers.
The Process of Creation
What sets De Rosa apart is the unique hand-carving stage: artisans meticulously etch intricate details into the surface of each piece, imbuing it with character and individuality. This step ensures that no two figurines are ever realised in exactly the same way.
The figurines then undergo their first firing in the kiln, reaching temperatures of 1000°C. Afterward, they are hand-painted using a palette of vibrant ceramic slips and enamel glazes, enhancing the carved details with bold colours and texture. A second firing in the kiln completes this stage.
The final touch is the application of gold and platinum, used to accentuate the figurine’s finer details. These precious metals transform each creation into what De Rosa terms “brightly coloured jewels” of ceramic design.
Before being packed, each figurine undergoes a final quality inspection. Limited editions are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, guaranteeing the piece’s origin and craftsmanship.
