Around 1897, James Herbert McNair drew a pencil sketch called Sacred Dove and Lowly Bird, Met in Love by Holy Word depicting Mary cradling the infant Jesus. In 2003, the sketch was sold at auction, though a similar example remains in the Huntarian Art Gallery in Glasgow.

This pencil sketch inspired Moorcroft Pottery designer Emma Bossons. In her 11-inch Met in Love vase, Mary is the personification of an Art Nouveau woman with dark flowing hair and delicate features. Above and below her, a series of blue birds soar towards the rim of the vase, while the focus is baby Jesus himself, gently cradled by his mother in the central band of the design. Emma’s colour palette is softened by the use of celadon clay which gives the design a feeling of calm and peace and brings McNair’s original design to life this Christmastime.

Adapted from Moorcroft’s description

Met in Love is the inaugural design of the unusual 77/11 shape. The vase comes in a limited edition of 10.
