Storytelling Inkwell

The market town of Saffron Walden lies not far from Maureen and Hugh Edwards’s current home. In the 16th and 17th centuries the saffron crocus was widely grown, thanks to the town’s favourable soil and climate. The stigmas of the flower were used in medicines, as a condiment, in perfume, as an expensive yellow dye, and as an aphrodisiac. The industry gave Walden its present name. In 2003, Emma Bossons created the popular design Saffron Crocus. Its proceeds flowed into nearby Thaxted Church funds, enabling repair and renovation work to continue.

Today, Nicola Slaney picks up the saffron idea to symbolise the continuing relationship between Moorcroft and the town. Saffron Gold is a simple but effective design: purple petals intwine with golden stigmas on this charming and very affordable vase.
